After years of success for the Ford F-150 Raptor and the recent introduction of the Ram 1500 TRX, General Motors is finally planning to introduce their entry into the off-road segment with the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2.
While Chevy has been lagging behind the competition for years without a full size, off road option, they haven’t been completely absent. The smaller Chevy Colorado ZR2 is an excellent off-road truck. Chevy will keep the ZR2 badging and introduce it to the full size Silverado with bigger tires, upgraded suspension and electronic locking front and rear differentials.
It does seem that GM is taking a different approach than Ram and putting less of an emphasis on raw performance, and more emphasis on the overall suspension. It is rumored to include a 6.2-liter V8 and potentially a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel. Neither engine option will come close to the 700+ horsepower in the Ram 1500 TRX and its’ Hellcat engine.
Originally, Chevrolet was rumored to launch the Silverado ZR2 with a 2022 release, but production delays amidst the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed everything back to a 2023 release. In the meantime, if you’re in the market for a high-quality full-size off-road pickup truck, your best bets are the TRX or the Raptor, but which will you choose?
